Lao Cai: Turning Green Tourism Into A Major Trend To Attract Visitors

With its inherent advantages of climate and landscape, seasonal tourism trends focusing on flower and fruit seasons in Lao Cai are increasingly attracting visitors and gaining prominence, significantly contributing to the overall achievements of local tourism. This serves as a leverage for Lao Cai to continue promoting green tourism in line with its established orientation.

In the last 3-5 years, the trend of tourists selecting destinations associated with distinctive flower and fruit seasons, as well as flower and fruit festivals in Lao Cai, has been on the rise.

Not only does this form of tourism contribute to the overall success of the “smokeless industry,” but it also provides dual benefits by boosting the agricultural economic production in the locality.

Few regions in Vietnam possess such vibrant flower seasons throughout the four seasons of the year as Lao Cai. It is also a rare locality with a climate type described as “temperate within a tropical environment,” featuring unique vegetables and fruits.

Perhaps it is this distinctive beauty that draws a large number of tourists to Lao Cai, creating a unique highlight on the national tourism map.

Referred to as the “White Plateau,” Bac Ha has become one of the unique destinations for flower watching during the plum blossom season, attracting many visitors at the beginning of spring.

Tam Hoa plum blossoms

Bac Ha is famous for two types of plums: Tam Hoa and Ta Van plums. The Tam Hoa plum blossoms are predominantly located in the center of the district, blooming from January to the end of February.

By early March, this is the time when Ta Van plums in higher regions bloom spectacularly, especially in the Ta Van Chu village, located about 20 km northwest of Bac Ha’s center.

Not only famed for its white plateau flowers, Bac Ha plums are a well-known brand of Lao Cai, having made it to the Top 100 distinctive specialty gifts of Vietnam, selected by the Vietnam Record Organization.

In mid-March, the pear blossom season also flourishes in Lao Cai. During this time, visitors to the White Pear Blossom Festival in Si Ma Cai can admire the pure white beauty on the mountainsides and hillsides amidst the majestic scenery, still untouched by modernization.

Rhododendron flowers in Sapa

From late February to June, rhododendron flowers compete to display their colors in Lao Cai. Not only known as the “queen of the flowers in the Northwest mountains,” rhododendrons also symbolize vitality and majestic beauty amidst the vast landscapes.

Situated at an altitude of 3,000 meters above sea level, this is the first flower-viewing path for rhododendrons in Vietnam, located in Kim Son Bao Thang Tu, part of the sacred architectural and spiritual complex on the holy peak of Fansipan.

Witnessing rhododendrons amidst the Northwest mountains is likely the most delightful experience for tourists who have the opportunity to be here during the blooming season.

At this time, it is also strawberry season in Sa Pa. Visiting strawberry gardens in Sa Pa is always a must-see option for tourists.

When visiting the strawberry gardens, tourists can see firsthand how the locals care for and cultivate strawberries, freely take photos, check-in, and personally pick ripe strawberries.

Strawberry gardens in Sa Pa

With an area of 7,000 m², the strawberries in the garden are cultivated using modern hydroponic technology, grown on trellises above the ground to ensure good growth and development. No stimulants or harmful chemicals are used, making it very safe for tourists to enjoy strawberries right on site.

Although the trend of tourism based on seasonal flowers and ripe fruits is not new, it is gradually becoming a main trend when well-planned and properly directed, helping to sustainably develop both the tourism and agriculture industries, contributing to the realization of Lao Cai’s goal of green tourism.
