Ta Van in Sa Pa Named Among Asia’s Most Beautiful Hilltop Villages

SCMP – the long-established and renowned newspaper based in Hong Kong (China) – recently listed Ta Van in Sa Pa among the most beautiful hilltop villages in Asia.

In the article, SCMP journalist Tim Pile observes that “villages clinging to mountainsides across Asia often share the same traits: spectacular natural scenery, captivating views, and the preservation of time-honored farming techniques.”

“Rice is cultivated on steep terraced fields, and houses are designed to withstand harsh weather conditions. Local traditions and indigenous cultures are well preserved and thrive, distinctly separate from the hustle and bustle of urban life,” Pile describes.

Whether accessed by winding mountain roads, forest trails, or cable cars, the villages featured on the list are ideal destinations for travelers seeking healing, slowing down, taking deep breaths, and immersing themselves in heritage and unique landscapes.

Located about 12 kilometers from Sa Pa town (Lao Cai province), Ta Van is described as a “picturesque village” nestled in a lush green valley. It is home to the Giay and H’Mong ethnic groups.

Traditional stilt houses are scattered along the terraced rice fields, surrounded by babbling streams and whispering bamboo forests.

Unlike the vibrant and bustling Cat Cat Village in the town center, Ta Van retains a peaceful and slower pace of life. Visitors can rent a motorbike to explore the village or simply walk along the trails to watch the golden sunrise spill over the valley.

In addition to Ta Van, SCMP’s list also features several other notable destinations, including Mae Kampong (Thailand), Hundar (India), Ella (Sri Lanka), Huangling (China), and Shirakawa (Japan).
