Sapa Stone Church – The Symbol Of The City In The Mist
Any visitor come to Sa Pa must have at least once photo with Sapa stone church. Although many years have passed, many new constructions have sprung up in this land, Sa Pa stone church is still a symbol – an indispensable check-in point for visitors when coming to the city in the mist.
Located in the center of town, Sa Pa stone church was built in 1926 and completed in 1935. The church was built at the foot of Ham Rong mountain range and is the main religious activity point of parishioners in Sa Pa. This work was designed by a French architect and is also one of the few remaining works to this day that still retains the original architecture.
The church was built by monolithic hewn stone. The stone blocks are linked by a mixture of sand, lime and molasses. The most attractive feature of this church is the ancient Roman Gothic architectural style, which is boldly reflected in the roof, bell tower, arches, and windows. With a total area of 6000 square meters; The most special is the church area consisting of 7 compartments, each of 500 square meters, which is designed extremely sophisticatedly and absorbs light with 32 stained glass windows – typical of ancient church architecture, ancient domes and ancient rows of smooth wooden chairs, with a bell tower 20m high and a bell 1.5m high, weighing hundreds of pounds.
From being a unique architectural feature in the heart of Sa Pa town, the church yard has become a familiar gathering point for the Mong and Dao people. People meet here to talk, exchange some goods…
