Cardamom – precious medicinal herbs in Bat Xat
Bat Xat district, Lao Cai province has favorable climate conditions to develop many types of high-value medicinal plants. Among the precious medicinal herbs of this place is cardamom, a highly valued medicinal herb cherished for its various health benefits and culinary uses.
The Cardamom flowers in early summer and harvest fruit in autumn. Cardamom is grown in mountainous areas above 2,000m, in cool climates, under large forest canopies, moist soil, rich in humus.

The cardamom seeds are used as a medicine with the effect of eliminating stagnation, treating fever, warming the stomach and helping to increase appetite. It also helps reduce the amount of caffeine in the body, while reducing stomach cramps and cooling the body. Cardamom is used to relieve stomach pain in children, relieve sore throats, relieve nerve pain, and treat respiratory infections caused by allergies such as coughs, colds, bronchitis and asthma.
The cardamom is also considered the “queen” of spices, because of its aromatic, sweet and slightly spicy properties. Cardamom is used to distill into essential oils for flavoring and as a spice in dishes and confectionery. In addition, this seed is also used as an additive in beverages such as tea and coffee.
The best times to visit Bat Xat for cardamom harvesting are typically during the harvest season, which usually occurs from September to December.
