Mong Ethnic – The Biggest Minority Group In Sa Pa

Mong ethnic was come to Viet Nam in the early of eighteen century, they lived together in the craggy alpine areas, strongly dissected topography, steep, difficult for travel. It’s microclimate is favorable for animal, poultry farming and growing fruit trees such as peaches, plums, pears… 

Mong people follows polytheism (everythings has a soul), their altar is placed in the middle of the house, in addition to many other locations to offer the main column ghost, kitchen ghost, home ghost…

While family members are ill, or performing ritual woeship, a small pile will be hung on the leave, or a branch front their house as a sign that their family are in a problem banning strangers in.

If visistors want tobe in their house, they must abtain the landlord’s consent.

Family relations occupy a very inportant position towards Mong people (those the same family name can born or die at their ralative home without abstinence).

Boys, girls are allowed to freely understand and choose their spous among those who are not their ralatives.

The custom of wife capture are still circulated today. Mong people in SaPa has 30,600 people, they are concentrated mainly in Sa Pa, San Sa Ho, Lao Chai, Hau Thao and Su Pan.

Mong people is famous for it’s traditional crafts such as processing wooden furniture, forging, casting production tools, particulary their steel techniques have reached the virtuosity level.

Mong women are grown flaw, weaving, impressive embroidering brocade, their products are appreciated, for it’s beautiful pattern, harmony color.

Costumes of Mong people in SaPa are different from Mong people in other locations:

women’s dresses are higher their knee, their legs were wrapped with leggings, their heads covered by an indigo scarves which wrapped almost like turbans of the ancient Vietnamese.

Four pieces “vest” shirt is commonly worn by men with tight bodice, covered with  glossy wax, the collar is built with the very typical pattern, looks very masculine.
